Our History

The Bulkley Valley in northwestern British Columbia provides an ideal combination of location and expertise. In addition to its proximity to an array of ecosystems representative of much of BC and Canada, the area has an impressive concentration of scientific, technical, and management expertise relating to natural and cultural resources, a tradition as a focal point for leading-edge research and management, and  strong community awareness of, and commitment to, sustainability. These factors create a remarkable opportunity to develop a nationally and internationally renowned centre for research.

In the fall of 2002, a group of scientists, resource professionals, and concerned citizens established a Centre for Natural Resources Research and Management in the Bulkley Valley. The purpose of the Centre is to  enhance scientific understanding of our environmental resources, including the role of humans in their use and management, thereby providing a basis for achieving sustainability in its ecological, social, and economic dimensions.

The Centre was incorporated in 2002 as a not-for-profit society, with charitable status. Anyone with an interest in natural and cultural resource research and management can apply for voting membership in the society. A Board of Directors, elected by the membership, provides the Centre’s strategic and policy direction, and oversees implementation of the research program.
