Paula Bartemucci has worked in the fields of plant ecology, forest research, botany and rare species conservation since 1995 when she first came to Smithers as a biology co-op student. She was fortunate to stay on and work for four years at the Ministry of Forests Research Section, where she benefited from valuable mentorship. Paula has a Bachelor’s degree in biology from UVIC (1995) and a Master’s degree in forest ecology from the Université du Québec à Montréal (2002). In recent years, her research has focused on the ecology and conservation of rare lichens in the Kispiox Valley, and she has recently published on this topic in collaboration with lichenologists from Norway. She lives on a rural property just outside Smithers, with her partner, Patrick Williston and two daughters, Chloë and Wren, who all enjoy exploring and learning about nature here in Smithers and on the North Coast in their old sailboat.
