The Response of Caribou Terrestrial Forage Lichens to Forest Harvesting and Mountain Pine Beetles in the East Ootsa and Entiako Areas (HCTF)

Project Reference Number: 2012-09

Project Status: Complete

Led by: Deborah Cichowski, Caribou Ecological Consulting, Smithers

Funder: Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation

This project assesses the effects of MPB and forest harvesting on caribou terrestrial forage lichens on the Tweedsmuir-Entiako caribou winter range by re-measuring permanent sample plots that were established in 2001 and re-measured in 2003, 2005 and 2007. For this project, all plots were re-measured in 2011, and data analysisis and write up will be completed in 2012-13.

HCTF funding will be specifically used to finish data entry; conduct data analyses; to produce a final report that summarizes data collected in 2011 and compares it to data collected since 2001; and, to prepare a journal publication on terrestrial caribou forage lichen dynamics during the 10-year period following the MPB epidemic.
