This project quantifies how light availability, site type, and canopy structure influence understory tree growth in sub-boreal forests. We propose to investigate: (1) how the relationship between light availability and growth of understory tree species changes across a site-type gradient, and (2) the influence of overstory structure on understory tree growth. The study builds on previous work undertaken on average site types. Our current forest management paradigm calls for increased focus on complex stand management. To evaluate and plan complex stand management, forest managers require additional knowledge of understory tree growth and quantitative relationships that can be used to predict understory tree growth. This project will improve our understanding of understory tree growth and provide quantitative relationships that can be used in forest management.
