About this Presentation

Len and Jim will introduce the BC Mountain Goat Society. Learn about what the Society does and some of the challenges that exist in protecting mountain goats from human interference. Based in Smithers and linked to mountain goat expertise across North America, the Society’s mission is to publicly inform, conserve and promote scientific (and citizen-based) research as it pertains to mountain goats. Learn how citizen science can help change how the world sees a vulnerable species. You can also learn more about the Society at www.bcmountaingoatsociety.ca

About the Presenters

Jim Easterday has been hiking with and observing local mountain goats for the last 60 years. He is the Co-founder and a Director of the BC Mountain Goat Society.

Len Vanderstar is a Director of the BC Mountain Goat Society, with 45 years spent in natural resources management. In association with Jonah Keim and Dr. Subhash Lele, Len applied a mountain goat Resource Selection Function to map prospective winter ranges throughout NW B.C. which were aerial field validated for the purposes of both legalized Ungulate Winter Range designations and ensuring that commercial activities, most notably heli-ski operations, would comply with preventing and avoiding disturbance to mountain goats. This work is ongoing, supporting heli-ski operators that seek to achieve/maintain social licence and have a sincere desire to minimize disturbance to mountain ungulates.
