Ray spent his first 18 years moving all over Canada, the USA and Europe before embarking on a 5-year sailing trip with his parents and siblings.  In 1980 Ray moved to the Bulkley Valley to finish high school before attending the University of Victoria to study Biology.  In 1989 Ray returned to the Valley and worked as an Environmental Impact Biologist and an Environmental Emergency Response Officer for the Ministry of Environment – Skeena Region. When the program was cancelled in 1995, Ray applied to become a Registered Professional Biologist and started NorthWest Response Ltd. (NWR), an environmental consulting company.
